Adventure Racing Training Courses - Page 1

Posted by: Admin on Sep 04, 03 | 6:28 am | Profile

If you are entering the world of Adventure Racing for the first time, or even if you are already a racer and wish to improve your skills, you may benefit from taking part in an adventure racing training course.

These are now offered in various locations, and the basis of the course is likely to be similar at each training facility.

A weekend introductory course is an ideal way to gain insight into the various disciplines and should also offer some instruction in outdoor survival skills.

Check the particular course content before signing up.
Ensure that the trainers are adventure racers themselves or are experts in their field.
Get a detailed description of the curriculum so that you can see that the relevant aspects will be covered.

The following points should be included in any adventure training:

Navigation and Orienteering:
Here experienced navigators should teach you how to read a map and use a compass.
This should include night navigation.

Mountain Biking:
This constitutes a large part of most races.
You should be instructed by competent riders who can assist you with riding technique and repair skills.
You should have access to riding on trails and mountainous terrain during the course.

Climbing/Rope Work:
Make sure the course covers belay set-up,ascending and rapelling.

Paddling:
Whitewater and open water paddling should be covered.
You should learn to negociate class II and III rapids.
Instruction should be given in good technique, and endurance skills.

General:
Advice on strategy, team-work, kit and preparation.

Often companies that organise races also have adventure training courses, so check the various races that interest you to see if they offer a course themselves or recommend a particular academy.
