Preparing for an Adventure Race... - Page 1

The phone call was flattering but caught me a little off-guard. Was I interested in maybe joining an all-male team to take part in an adventure race next year? Sure, was the reply, followed by "of course", when I was asked if I was reasonably competent in the required disciplines of mountain biking, horse riding, climbing, kayaking and orienteering. Well, lets be honest, what self-respecting female is going to let a group of hunky young guys think she isn’t just the bionic woman they need to compliment their team. Certainly not this one. Anyway, a year is a long time, so I could train for everything, couldn’t I?

I was already half way there once I purchased my top-of-the-range-well-over-a-grand-mountain bike. Having the right gear has got to be half the battle. My unfortunate young neighbour didn’t totally agree when he accompanied me on my inaugural wobbly cycle ride to a local park. At the end of a frustrating (for him) and embarrassing (for me) afternoon, training wheels were mentioned. Aren’t those the little wheel things kids have to help them balance? Opps! Maybe I should try something else for a bit.
